Tonttu-SHY - SBF Gnome

Tämän vuoden viides SHY (Salainen HelmiYstävä) oli teemalla Tonttu. Jokaiselle oli arvottu ystävä, jolle piti lähettää Jouluun mennessä yllätyshelmipaketti. Tällaisen ihanuuden sain omalta Tonttuystävältäni (aidon Napapiiriltä lähetetyn joulukortin lisäksi):

Oikealla ylhäällä isoja sinisiä aventuuriineja, sen alla kasvonaamiopussi, alapuolella sodaliittia pyöreinä, nugetteina ja sydäminä. Alhaalla sydänrasioihin kerättyinä sardonyxit: mustia ovaaleja, punaisia tynnyreitä ja useamman kokoisia pyöreitä punaisia. Vasemmalla ylhäällä Joulupukin äänikirje, messinkiketjun sisällä karneolia, säröakaattia ja foliolasiset sydämet ja tabletti. Sininen raidallinen ja vihreä ovaali ovat myös lasia (vihreästä en ole kyllä ihan varma). Kiitos, kulta SHY-tonttuni! Tästä riittää inspiraatioita pitkäksi aikaa!

On the Finnish beaders' forum the fifth SBF (Secret Beader Friend) had the theme of "Gnome" (as Santa's little helper). Everyone taking part in it had to send one special bead surprise package for Christmas. This is what I got from my dear Gnome friend (plus the Christmas greeting card, sent specially from Polar Circle):

On the upper right we have big blue aventurines on top of a pouch of face mask (thanks, this was needed!), below them there are sodalite rounds, few big nuggets and hearts. On lower right, in the heart-shaped boxes there are sardonyxes: black ovals, red barrels and several sizes of rounds. On the upper left there is a cassette with Santa's personal greetings, below it piece of brass chain (pretty!), carnelian rounds, fire crab agate and silver foil hearts and flat roundel. I think the white and blue striped pendant and green oval are glass, but I'm not quite sure about the green one. Thank You, my dear Gnome friend, from these I get inspiration for some time!

Ovikranssi - Christmas Wreath

Tällaisen, puolessa tunnissa hätäisesti väsätyn kranssin sain oveen tehtyä. Viime tippaan meni, jouluaattona vasta ehdin paneutua tähän. Sieltä täältä matkan varrelta kerätyt kuusenoksatkin olivat loppua kesken. Mutta meneehän tämä.

This is our Christmas Wreath this year, made very hastily during Christmas Eve. It took me about half an hour to make this, so the quality is quite poor this time. I collected the spruce brances from here and there during my walks (I don't want to destroy any single tree), and making the wreath I soon discovered that I didn't have quite enough of them. Well, this will do for this winter. ,-)

Valkoinen jakku - White Cardigan

Tämä projekti oli jonkun aikaa (nooh, vaivaiset puoli vuotta) säilössä puolivalmiina, nyt sitten käyttökunnossa. Jakulla on painoa aika reilusti ja se on muhkea ja pehmeä. Lanka on aikanaan Lidlistä ostettua löyhäkierteistä "nimetöntä" lankaa (80 % akryyli, 20 % villa), kudottu nro 8 puikoilla. Mallin löysin muistaakseni Garnstudion sivuilta. Hihat ovat 3/4-pituiset. Nappeja ei ole ollenkaan, vaan takki kiinnitetään kilttineulalla (kunhan saan koristeltua sopivan yksilön).

This cardigan project was stashed away for some time (well, eh, about six months) half finished, but finally it's ready for use. The cardigan is quite heavy and it's very soft and fluffy and warm. I bought the yarn long ago from Lidl, it has no special name, just "knitting yarn". It is very loosely twisted, made of 80% acrylic and 20% wool. I used size 8 knitting needles (metric size).
The pattern I found from - if my memory serves me right - Garnstudio's pages. Sleeves are 3/4, and I didn't put any buttons (the holes would have been quite ugly). The cardigan can be fastened with a kilt pin (after I have finished the idea I have in my head).

Retro Repair vol 3

Viimeisiä korjauksia tältä erää!
Ensin arvokkaampi koru, joka on fasetoitua onyxia tai mustaa kiveä - joka tapauksessa kiveä, ei muovia. Lukko tuotti runsaasti päänvaivaa, kun korjausvaiheessa huomasin sen olleen alunperin hopeoitu ja komeaa strassia pitelevien kynsien pehmenneen lähes makarooniksi. Yritin saada maailmalta tilattua (Suomesta ei löytynyt tuollaista), koetin löytää kavereilta, mut kun ei. Täytyy kehottaa omistajaa kohtelemaan lukkoa erittäin hellästi. :)
Osakseni jäi siis kivien ja lukon puhdistus, lukon varovainen korjaaminen ja kivien laittaminen kolmeen vaijeripätkään. Aiemmin ne olivat siimassa, joko oli jo lähes poikki kulunut.

Last posting about these repairs!
First I introduce the more valuable necklace, apparently made of faceted onyx or black stone - some stone, anyway, not plastic. I had more than enough trouble with the clasp: when examining it for cleaning I found it to have lost its silver plating totally and the prongs holding the big strass were soft like overcooked spagetti. What a disappointment! I desperately tried to find a new fancy clasp from Finland, from my beader friends and even from European shops, but no chance. Either the offered clasp was not suitable or the delivery time was too long. Finally I cleaned and repaired the clasp the best I could, and warned the owner to treat it with great care. I also cleaned the stones and strung them to beading wire. They were originally strung to thin fishing line, which was badly worn.

Tämän kanssa oli loppua kekseliäisyys. Koru on onttoa muovia ja etuosa oli pahasti rikkoutunut. Mitä ilmeisimmin osa "helmistä" oli kateissa, osa oli rikki. Korussa ei ollut lukkoa lainkaan, eli pituutta täytyi saada tarpeeksi. Lopulta ratkaisin ongelman niin, että yksinkertaisesti poistin osan jäljelle jääneistä kiekoista ja laitoin väliin isoja siemenhelmiä (AB crystal ja musta). Kaksi pienemmistä mustista kiekoista liimasin kokoon ja käytin. Kulahtaneiden "hopea"helmien tilalle vaihdoin opaali-imitaatiohelmet, jotta pituutta tuli riittävästi. En ole kovin tyytyväinen, mutta mahdoton mikä mahdoton.

This plastic necklace came to be the most frustrating job of them all. The material was hollow plastic, and the front part was totally broken. Obviously some of the "beads" were lost forever, some were broken. There was no clasp, so I had to make it long enough. Finally, after a lot of thought and several disappointing tests, I simply ditched some of the black disks. The rest I used and glued together the broken ones. I then added big seed beads in between (colours black and AB crystal). I replaced the two original, badly worn "silver plated" beads with imitation opal beads to get just a bit more length. I'm not very happy with the result, but impossible is impossible.

Villiä marmoria - Wild Marble

Marmorijaspista ja marmoria.
Päätin ottaa itselleni haasteen ja tehdä korun jaspiksesta, kivilajista, joka ei kuulu suosikkeihini. Tämä marmorijaspiksen nimellä myyty oranssinpunertavan kirjava kivi sai minut kuitenkin lämpenemään. Kaveriksi valitsin Jorisalta ostamaani marmoria, joka on sävyltään pehmeämpää kuin lumikvartsi tai valkoinen jade. Hellän harmahtavanvalkoinen sävy sopii täydellisesti yhteen jaspiksen vaaleimpien osien kanssa. Villiä korussa edustaa paitsi haaste, myös käärmelukko. Jotenkin jaspiksen kuvioinnista tulee mieleeni käärmeen nahka.
Helmien väleissä on antiikkihopeoituja daisyja ja rannekorussa pitkä säätöketju.

Marble Jasper (rounds and coin) and marble.
I decided to take on a challenge and make a jewellery set of Jasper, a kind of stone I don't like very much. This orangish coloured matrix jasper, sold as Marble Jasper, softened my heart. :-) To accompany the jasper I chose natural marble, which I bought from my beader friend Jorisa. I think it's colour is softer than in Snow Quartz or White Jade. The tender greyish white shade fits perfectly to those lightest parts of Jasper. Wildness comes from the wild challenge and the snake clasp. For some strange reason the colour pattern of this Jasper reminds me of snakeskin.
Between the beads I used antique silver daisies and the bracelet has a long extender chain.

Kuukauden teema: Joulu - Theme of the Month: Christmas

Helmetin joulukuun teemana on - kuinkas muutenkaan - Joulu. Kerrankin pääsen osallistumaan, kun olin jo valmiiksi suunnitellut ja toteuttanut tämän sydänkorun. Koska kuva on taas mitä sattuu, täytyy vähän selventää: vaijeriin pujotetut helmet ovat 6 mm:n tummanpunaisia ja valkoisia kuunpintahelmiä, samoja myös korvakoruissa. Keskusriipuksena iso hopeafoliosydän, joka on lähes kirkas. Korvakoruissa samaa virkaa toimittavat isot särölasihelmet. Lukko, joka löytyi Harjavallan miitistä ostamastani sekapussista, on aiheeseen sopivasti tähden muotoinen, salpa puolikuu. Tervetuloa, Joulu!

In the Finnish beader's forum we have a "Theme Of The Month" jewellery project. In December it is - of course - Christmas. What a strike of luck, that I have already made a suitable set for it! The picture is, once again, very poor, so I'd better explain: the beads in the wire are 6 mm very dark red and shiny white moon pearls and of course the same in the earrings. The pendant is a big, almost transparent silver foil heart. To somewhat match it, I used 8 mm crackle glass beads in the earrings. The clasp has its own story: during the big meeting in summer I bought a small bag of mixed metal clasps. From that bag I found just the right one: the clasp is star-shaped and the toggle is a crescent moon. Welcome, Christmas!

Talvisia korvakoruja - Earrings for Winter

Talvi (mikä talvi, nyt sataa vettä ja maa on musta!) toi tullessaan villapaitakauden ja yllättävän tarpeen yksinäisille korvakoruille. Niinpä väsäsin lempivillapaitaani sopivat korut: "Jäiset marjat" sekä "Lumipallot". Marjoissa on kullanvärisessä korumetallissa 6 mm:n punaisia helmiäislasihelmiä ja huurrettu lasipisara. Lumipalloissa hopeanväristä korumetallia, hehkuvan siniset lasikuutiot (ehkä Swarovskia, en tiedä, kun sain lahjaksi) sekä valkoinen, kirkas ja AB-käsitelty fasettilasihelmi.

The winter came (what winter, where? - we have fog and rain day after day, no snow at all) and with it came the need for woolen pullovers. Suddenly I realized, that I had no "lonely" earrings to use with my favourite pullover. So I made these: "Icy Berries" and "Snowballs".
In "Icy Berries" I used gold plated metal, 6 mm red faux pearls and frosted glass drops. In "Snowballs" there are shiny blue glass cubes (perhaps even Swarovski; I don't know, because I got them as a present) and white, clear and AB-clear faceted glass beads.

Retro Repair vol 2

Lisää korjattuja koruja! Korjattujen versioiden kuvat ovat surkeita (taas kerran), kuvat on otettu iltamyöhällä kovassa kiireessä. Valmiiden korujen kuvissa oleva läntti on kahden euron kolikko, jonka laitoin antamaan mittakaavaa.

Kevyet, värjäämättömät puuhelmet oli solmittu kalastajalankaan, yksi helmi oli ihan irrallaan. Puhdistin helmet varovasti ja pujotin ne ohueen vaijeriin. Koru on niin pitkä, että lukkoa ei tarvita, vaijerin päät vain puristushelmillä yhteen.

Retro Repair continues! Again I have to apologize the poor quality of photos, they were taken late at night in a hurry. In the photos of the finished necklaces there is a strange spot: it is a two euro coin, placed there to give some scale.

First, let me introduce very lightweight, uncoloured wooden beads, which were strung in thin cotton yarn. One bead was left wandering alone. I cleaned the beads very gently and strung them to thin beading wire. The necklace is so long that no clasp is needed. I just fixed the ends of wire with crimp beads.

Seuraavana tummansiniset muovihelmet, klassista 60-lukua eli muovissa saumatkin näkyvissä. Korun omistaja toivoi siitä aikaisempaa pidempää, joten lisäsin väleihin raikkaan turkoosit helmiäislasihelmet. Ilmeisesti neljä pienempää muovihelmeä olivat niitä, joita on alunperin ollut isompien väleissä. Koru on tehty vaijeriin ja kiinnitetään hopeoidulla papukaijalukolla.

Next we have a classic right from the 60's: even the seams were visible in these big, dark blue plastic beads. The owner wanted her necklace to be longer, so I added fresh turquoise faux pearls between the big beads. I suppose the four small, dark beads were those, which had been between the big beads earlier. The necklace is strung to beading wire and has a silver plated lobster clasp.

Näistä kirkkaan joulunpunaisista puuhelmistä tykkäsin itsekin, ja niin taisi tykätä omistajakin uudistetusta versiosta. Myös näistä hän halusi pidemmän, joten laitoin väliin mustat noppahelmet, joissa on kullanvärisiä tähtimäisiä kuvioita. Korun tein kullanväriseen vaijeriin ja laitoin kullanvärisen papukaijalukon.

Even to my own surprise I liked these bright Christmas-red wooden beads myself, and so did the owner like the new form I gave to them. She wanted to have more lenght to this necklace, too, so I dived into my treasure chest and harvested some black cube beads, which have gold coloured star-like ornaments. I used gold coloured wire and gold plated lobster clasp.

Jättikokoiset (25 mm) tumman sinivihreät puuhelmet aiheuttivat melkoisen haasteen. Mietin pitkään toteutusta, joka ei näyttäisi hirvittävän raskaalta kuristuspannalta. Lisäksi helmet olivat painavat ja niissä oli todella suuri reikä. Päädyin hyvin nykyaikaiseen toteutukseen eli solmin helmet kaksinkertaiseen vihreään satiininauhaan siten, että korusta tuli muodikkaan pitkä.

These gigantic (25 mm) dark blue-green wooden beads gave me some challenge. I had to think hard what to make of them, because I didn't want the necklace look like a massive strangling collar. And to add my problems, the beads were quite heavy and had a huge hole. Finally I decided for a very modern variation by knotting the beads to doubled green satin cord to make a fashionably long necklace.

Syksyinen vaahtera - Maple Tree In Autumn

Retrokorujen korjausprojekti tuppaa viemään kaiken liikenevän vapaa-ajan (sukkien kutomisen ja koirien kuraisten tassunjälkien siivoamisen ohella). Pakko oli kuitenkin toteuttaa jo pitkään päässä pyörinyt idea, kun sain jo noita pienempiä hematiittejakin.

Helmetistä ostetut valtavan kokoiset akaatti"riisit" toivat elävästi mieleeni syksyisen vaahteran väriloiston. Syksyn tummia sävyjä (yötä, sadetta, kuraa...) edustaa tässä linkkikorussa hematiitti, jota on sekä 10- että 8-millisenä. Korvakoruissa akaatin tilalla pikkuiset karneolitynnyrit sekä 4 mm:n hematiitteja.

Repairing the retro jewellery is taking an awful lot of my free time (besides the sock-knitting and cleaning after two doggies with muddy paws, as always in the autumn). In spite of this I just had to make this piece, because it had been developing in my head for a long time, and I finally got the 8 mm hemalykes.

I bought the huge rice-shaped agate beads from my fellow beader, and they immediately brought to my mind a maple tree with colourful leaves in autumn. The darker colours of autumn (night, rain, mud...) are represented in this piece by hemalyke, which I used in 10 mm and 8 mm round beads. The metal parts are silver plated copper. In the earrings I used small carnelian barrels and 4 mm hemalyke beads.

Retro Repair vol 1

Oli pakko opetella ihan uutta jälleen, eli puuhelmien solmiminen vahanauhaan. Ruskeat, noin 20 mm puuhelmet oli pujotettu kuminauhaan, eli varsinainen kuristuspanta (vasemmalla ylhäällä). Pujottelin helmet ruskeaan 2 mm vahattuun puuvillanauhaan ja solmut väliin. Hopeanvärinen papukaijalukko. (oikealla alhaalla)

Violetit puuhelmet olivat totaalisessa alennustilassa eli irrallaan (vasemmalla alhaalla). Ne solmin kaksinkertaiseen violettiin 1 mm vahanauhaan samalla tekniikalla kuin punon makeanveden helminauhoja. Kullanväriset nauhanpäätteet ja papukaijalukko. Kohtuullisen onnistunut harjoitustyö (oikealla alhaalla). ,-)

I had to learn again a new technique, namely using waxed cotton cord, for this repairing project. But I don't mind, it's just good to keep my hands and brain working. ,-) The big (about 20 mm) brown wooden beads were originally strung into a elastic cord, making quite a choker (picture on upper left). I strung them into a brown 2 mm waxed cotton cord and knotted between each bead. Finally I put on silver coloured clasp (picture on upper right).

The pretty lilac wooden beads were in a real mess (lower left). I used 1 mm waxed cotton cord in violet color and made the necklace just like I make fresh water pearl necklaces: with a double cord and knotting between beads. Here I had gold coloured cord ends and clasp (lower right). I'm quite satisfied with these projects.

Helmiäislasihelminauha oli erittäin likainen ja helmet pahasti kuluneita. Koru oli pujotettu siimaan ja päässä oli rikkäinen lukko (vasemmalla). Puhdistin helmet hellävaraisesti, pujottelin vaijeriin ja lisäsin kullanvärisen lukon, koska vaaleat helmet ovat kermanväriset. Omistaja halusi korulle hieman lisää pituutta, joten jokaiseen helmen väliin laitoin kullanvärisen hopeasisuksisen 8/o-siemenhelmen. Harmittaa, että kuva valmiista työstä piti ottaa kiireessä ja tietysti se epäonnistui, eivät ne helmet väriään menettäneet puhdistuksessa, vain likakerroksen. En voinut enää ottaa uutta kuvaa, kun koru lähti kotiinsa.

The glass pearl necklace in cream and green colour was very dirty and to my eyes the beads seemed quite worn out. It was strung to a curly piece of fishing line with one big bead loose. The clasp was badly broken, in fact torn to bits (picture on the left). I cleaned the faux pearls very gently, strung them into beading wire and added a gold tone clasp. As the owner wanted some more length to her necklace, I also added size 8/o golden colour silver lined seed bead between all the pearls. I'm quite disappointed with the photo on the right, which was taken very hastily. It's soooo bad (the pearls didn't loose their colour at all), and now I can't take another picture, because the necklace has already gone "home".

Hopeaa, vaikkei vasemman puoleisista kuvista uskoisikaan. Ketju oli muutamasta kohtaa vääntynyt pahasti, joten varovasti pihdeillä oikaisin kuviot kohdalleen ja puhdistin korun. Huivineula olikin hankalampi juttu, sillä siihen oli tarttunut jotain tahmeaa mustaa. Sitä piti varovasti rapsutella vanhalla, pehmeällä hammasharjalla, mutta kohtuullisen puhtaaksi se tuli.

Yes, it is silver in the photos on the left, although it seems hard to believe. The exotic looking old chain was badly bent in some places, so I took my pliers and very, very gently straightened the twisted parts. Then I cleaned the necklace and was surprised myself as well (picture on the right). The small brooch was a tough cookie, because there was something black and sticky on it. But I took my time with an old, soft toothbrush and voilá: it is reasonably clean now.

Retrorappio - Retro Ruins

Sainpa kollegaltani "pienen" tehtävän: nämä surkeaan jamaan joutuneet sekalaiset retrokorut pitäisi saattaa entiseen loistoonsa. Huhhuh. Tässä vaiheessa näyttää todella pahalta. Enimmäkseen tarjolla on puuhelmiä, jopa ihan kauniitakin (ainakin violetit, tummanruskeat ja punaiset), mutta seasta löytyy muovia, helmiäislasia ja yksi kivihelmikoru. Myös metallia on hieman tarjolla, se pitäisi puhdistaa ja liitokset huoltaa. Haastetta kerrakseen, mahdanko selvitä näistä vuodessa? Huokaus.

My colleague came to me with this "small and easy" task: these mishandled and ruined retro necklaces need to be restored to their actual beauty. Oh my, oh my... This pile looks really terrible and sad. Mostly the beads are made of wood, some even quite nice (the lilacs, dark browns and reds), but among the mess there is also plain plastic, faux pearls and one of stone. Some metal is there, too, waiting to be cleaned and checked over and repaired. I like to call this a big challenge and now I wonder if I'm finished with these in just one year. Sigh.

Kuparitähkän kaverit - Mates for Forars Kaede

Hieman pienempiä lenkkejä oli sopivasti, että sain väsättyä myös Tähkä-rannekorun. Tässä on itse väännelty lukko (älä katso liian tarkkaan: ensimmäinen yritys ja pihdinjälkiä), samanlaisen systeemin tein myös kaulakorulle.

There were enough smaller rings left, so I made also a bracelet Forars Kaede. The colour of this coiling wire is so special, that I had to make also the clasp myself (don't look too closely: this is my first attempt and there are quite a few toolmarks). I made same kind of clasp also for the necklace.

Kuparinsävyisiä korvakoruja ei sitten löytynyt varastoista yhtään, joten pakko oli kiireellä väsätä yhdet. Keskuskivenä on karneolitynnyri, ympärillä 8 mm ja 6 mm AB-lasihelmiä. Korviskoukutkin ovat kuparia.

Of course I had no copper coloured earrings anywhere, so I had to make one pair quickly to finish the set. The center stone is carnelian barrel, surrounding beads are 8 mm and 6 mm AB glass beads. Even the earring hooks are copper.

Sukkia - Socks

Talvi tekee tuloaan ja kesän aikana on taas kulutettu sukkia peltosaappaissa. Syksyn rutiineihin kuuluu sukkien kutominen telkkaria katsellessa. Tässä parin viikon iltapuhteiden tulos: kahdet miehelle, yhdet itselle.

The winter is coming and many of our wool socks have been worn out in the wellies during the summer. It seems that my autumn routines include knitting socks while watching TV. Here is the result from past couple of weeks: two pairs for my husband, one pair for me.

Kuparitähkä - Forars Kaede in Copper

Ketjumalli on Tähkä, myös Kukonaskeleksi kutsuttu. Ensimmäinen valmis ketju, jonka olen tehnyt ihan langasta asti itse.

Keräilin keväällä käämilankaa radioamatöörien siivousmyynnistä "vie pois" -hinnalla. Pinnoitettua kuparia siis. Lanka on noin 1,2-millistä. Käytin 6-millistä veiviä, jonka sain isännän avustuksella ja ohjeilla alumiinipuikosta pätkiä, väännellä ja viimeistellä.

Käämilanka on varsin pehmeää, joten sitä oli suhteellisen helppo näperrellä. Liukas pinnoite aiheutti kyllä välillä painokelvottomia ilmaisuja niin sahatessa kuin punoessa. Muutamankin kerran lenkki singahti olohuoneen halki hurjaa vauhtia. Onneksi ei tullut vaurioita. ,-)

Kaulakorulla pituutta hulppeat 57 senttiä ja lankaa kului yhden pienen käämin verran. Tästä on hyvä jatkaa!

This chain weave is called Forars Kaede, sometimes also Spring Chain. This is the first chain I have made all the way from scratch (meaning the wire).

In the spring I collected some used coiling copper in the local radio amateurs' spring cleaning sale. The price, when I asked for it, was "just take it away from here". So this is plated copper wire, dead soft, about 1.2 mm thick. I used 6 mm rod, which I - with some advice from my dear husband - cut and modified from aluminium.

Coiling wire is quite soft, so it was easy to manipulate. Though, the coating was somewhat slippery, causing some comments quite unsuitable to repeat here, when I was saw cutting and weaving. A few, or even some more, rings went flying around our livingroom with rocket speed. Luckily there was no collateral damage. ,-)

The necklace chain is 57 cm long and bold, and it took one small elecrtical coilful of wire. I'm quite proud now, this is a nice start!

Riikinkukko - Peacock Beauty

Ihanat, tummat makeanveden helmet mustassa silkissä ja korvakoruissa ketjujen päissä. Yritin järjestellä helmiä hieman koon mukaan - tosin se ei tässä kuvassa sanottavasti näy. Aurinko oli juuri häipymässä sadepilven taakse, joten kuvaajalle tuli vähän turhan kiire.

Beautiful, dark freshwater pearls knotted in black silk. In the earrings I used again small pieces of bulk chain. This necklace is significantly shorter than the pastel coloured one.

I tried to arrange the pearls so that the necklace would be somewhat graduated. Sadly the result does not show in this photo; the last rays of sun were just gonna go behind a big, dark cloud, so I had to hurry.

Kirjotoppi - Multicoloured Tank Top

Kesä taisi jo mennä, mutta tässä vihdoin kuva kirjavasta kesätopista. Puuvillalanka on valmiiksi raidallista, mallineule on samaa koko topissa. Ihanan viileä! Toppi on neulottu kainaloihin asti yhtenä kappaleena, joka antaa mielenkiintoisen väriefektin.

The summer is already gone, but now I remembered to take a picture of this tank top. The yarn itself is multicoloured cotton. Top is knitted up to armpits in one piece, which gives the top quite a unique colour effect. Knitting pattern is the same all over, with tiny holes. This is so wonderfully cool during a hot day!

Suloista riisiä - Sweet Rice

En ole kyllä mikään helminauhaleidi, mutta tämä setti on minun! Makeanveden helmiä riiseinä, valkoista, persikkaa ja malvaa, solmittuna helmisilkkiin. Siitä nimikin: nämä eivät ole katkeraa riisiä (elokuvaklassikko "Riso Amaro" vuodelta 1949). Nauha on oikeasti pitkä, peräti 56 senttiä + lukko. Menee mukavasti vaikka poolopuseron päälle. Korviksissa jokainen helmi roikkuu omassa ketjunpätkässään.

I don't consider myself as a lady with pearls, but this set is definitely mine! White, peach and mauve freshwater rice pearls knotted in silk. The sweetness of colours gives the name: these are not Bitter Rice (movie classic "Riso Amaro" from 1949). The necklace is really a long one, 56 cm plus the clasp. I made it long, so it fits with a polo shirt during colder season. In the earrings every pearl is hanging on its own little piece of chain, so they move quite nicely.

Ostosylläri - Shopping surprise

Tällainen pino odotti minua, kun tulin töistä! Isäntä oli käynyt kaupoilla ja muistanut myös helmeilijää: pari lokerolaatikkoa (kiva, saan delicat järjestykseen ja vähän muutakin) sekä digitaalinen työntömitta. Lisäksi hän vielä lupasi vääntää mulle muutaman veivin... tässä täytyy ryhtyä sahaostoksille!

This pile was waiting for me, when I came home from work today! My husband had been in the shops and had remembered the beader in the family, too. I got a couple of plastic boxes (nice, now I can finally arrange my delicas and perhaps something else as well) and a digital caliper. And on top of these things he promised to make a few rods for making jump rings... oh my, I have to go shopping for a tiny saw!

Prinsessa Ruusunen - Sleeping Beauty

Jonkin aikaa sitten asetin itselleni haasteen, kun ostin näitä hempeitä rodoniitteja (voimakkaan punainen on enemmän minun värini). Sain kuin sainkin nästä setin tehtyä, nimi tulee sitten hempeydestä ja utuisesta ruusun väristä. Rodoniittiriisien välissä on harmaata särölasia, samoin korviksissa. Rannekorun keskiön muodostaa fluoriittikukka, jonka kahta puolta on ruusunpunertavat särölasihelmet. Korviksiin kokeilin ensimmäistä kertaa laittaa pätkän ketjua, saa nähdä miten se kestää.

Some time ago I set myself a challenge: I bought these tender and sweet rhodonite parts from a fellow beader. This is not quite my kind of red, I like the strong reds better. But I succeeded to create a set, and the name - "Sleeping Beauty" - comes from the misty, rosy colour. Between the rhodonite rices I placed light grey crackled glass beads and tiny silver metal beads. The centerpiece of the bracelet is made from a fluorite flower accompanied by two slightly rose coloured crackled glass beads. For the first time I tried some chain for the earrings - time will show, how the chain can take the strain. ,-)

Atacaman kuutamo - Moon Over Atacama

Aavikkosarja saa lopultakin jatkoa. Tällä kertaa ajattelen yöllistä Atacaman autiomaata, joka on maailman kuivin aavikko. Öisen aavikon siniset sävyt tulevat sini-hopeisista Desert Sun -helmistä (kiitos Katjuska!) ja metalliharmaista helmiäislasihelmistä, kuun kelmeää valoa kuvaavat opaali-imitaatiohelmet. Tähtiäkin pitää olla mukana, niitä edustavat kaulakorun riipusosana toimiva vuorikristallimöllykkä sekä rannekorun keskellä olevat fasettihiotut AB-kristallilasihelmet ja kaksi sinistä kultakiveä.

Second set in the Desert-series, finally. This time I was thinking of night in Atacama desert, in Chile, which is said to be the most dry desert in the world. The blue and silver colors of desert in the night come from blue-silver Desert Sun beads (thank You, Katjuska, my beader friend!) and dark grey glass pearls. The yellowish pale moonlight is represented by opalite imitation beads. But the dark desert night is not perfect without bright stars, so I added a genuine rock crystal nugget to the necklace and couple of faceted AB-crystal beads and two blue goldstones to the bracelet.

Simply Black

Kesäkausi sitten mennä vilahti, koruja ei montaa syntynyt. Nyt olen taas palaillut harrasteen pariin, useampiakin vaijerikoruja olen tehnyt kuin transsissa. Puutarhassa touhutessa on runsaasti aikaa rakennella ideoita varastossa olevista helmistä. ,-)

Ensimmäisenä uutuutena varsinainen retrokoru, mehukkaan painava "Simply Black". Fasettihiottuja mustia helmiä, keskellä yksi hervottoman iso ja siitä niskaa kohti pienentyen. Kaulakorun keskushelmi on 18 mm, seuraavat 16 mm ja pienimmät helmet lukon vieressä 12 mm. Korviksissa lisänä yksi musta swaro. Väleissä hopeanväriset 2 mm:n metallihelmet.

Oh my, it seems that I just speeded through the midsummer, without any serious beading. Now I have had some time to it again, thanks to some rainy days and darkening evenings. I have made wire jewellery like I was possessed, because it is such a quick way to get finished. During the summer, while working in our garden, I had plenty of time to create jewellery ideas in my mind. So, here we go again!

First of the new sets I present to You a real retro necklace, "Simply Black", which is nicely heavy and massive. It's made of faceted black beads and the middle bead is really gigantic, 18 mm. ,-) Next beads are 16 mm and so on; the smallest beads beside the clasp are 12 mm. Between the blacks there are 2 mm silver coloured metal beads.

Suklaasydän - Chocolate Heart

Suklaasydän-setti avaa - pitkän tauon jälkeen - loppukesän helmeilykauden. Keskikesän aikana en ehtinyt tehdä kuin Luxonian korukilpailun työn, senkin melko hätäisesti. Puutarhassa on puuhaa riittänyt.

Nämä sardonyx-tynnyrit ehtivät saattaa minut lähes epätoivon partaalle, kunnes sateisena sunnuntaiaamuna herätessäni tajusin, että minullahan on jo kaikki tarpeellinen! Tai siis melkein kaikki - tähän settiin kuuluisivat ehdottomasti kupariosat. Ovat jo tilauksessa.

Rannekoru on kaksirivinen ilman välipalikoita. Siitä lähtee liikuteltaessa kiva ääni. ,-) Tietää ainakin, että koru on kiveä eikä muovia. Kaulakorun sydänriipus on lasia.

After a long summer break this Chocolate Heart set opens the late summer beading season. During the hottest summer I had no time for beading. My garden has kept me very busy. Even the necklace for Luxonia's beading contest was made very hastily, although the idea was clear in my mind.

The sardonyx barrels had been driving me crazy for almost a half year, until one rainy Sunday morning I woke up with the solution! I already had everything I needed for the set! Well, eh... almost everything - this set needs copper parts, without a doubt. I already have ordered those.

The bracelet has two rows without spacers. When I move my hand, the bracelet gives a nice sound. ,-) Everybody within hearing distance can be sure, that I'm wearing stone beads, not some plastic. Yes, and the heart in the necklace is a glass pendant.

Juhannusyö - Midsummer Night

Ihan ensimmäinen ketjuni! Ostin Beadsistersiltä valmiin kitin Byzantine-ranneketjua. Mukana olivat ohjeet ja kaikki tarvikkeet, lukkokin (pihdit sentään piti olla itsellä). Kuten kuvasta näkyy, lenkit ovat ISOJA, eikä niiden vääntäminen kunnolla kiinni ollut mikään helppo juttu. Hyvä harjoitustyö kumminkin, koska ketju on melkoisen näyttävä. En voi suositella sellaiselle, jota harmittavat irvistelevät lenkit ja pihtien jäljet värillisissä renkaissa. ,-)

Rekvisiittana olevassa kukkakimpussa on muuten Juhannuksen perinteiseen tapaan seitsemän kukkaa - tai oikeammin kuusi kukkaa ja yksi heinä. :)

My very first chain! I bought a kit for Byzantine bracelet from Beadsisters a long time ago. It has been waiting while I was trying to find courage to begin. Now it's here, ready and surprisingly pretty. The kit included everything: tutorial, rings and even a lobster clasp - well, of course I needed to have some pliers of my own. In the lower picture you can see, that the rings are quite BIG, so it was not an easy task to close them properly. But in any case, this kit was a very good practise job, because the bracelet is very "bold and beautiful" (my hands are not small...). Sadly I have to remind, that this kit is not suitable for person, who gets frustrated with squiggly rings and pliermarks on the coloured rings. ,-)

By the way, the small flower bouquet in the upper photo is the traditional Finnish Midsummer Maqic Bouquet of seven flowers - eh, six flowers and one flowering grass. :)

Samoa

I wanted a single-colour light summer jewelry set, which I can use with strong colours like turquoise or bright red. This is it! After a lot of thinking and planning I made this set with jewelry wire: MOP nuggets from VitaBeads, cream coloured faux pearls, silver plated 2 mm metal beads and plated parts. I just love this set!

SSHY viimeinen ihanuus

SSHY:n viimeinen yllätyspaketti oli varsinainen aarrearkku! Suloisen kortin lisäksi paketista löytyi Latviasta (luulisin) ostettu iso Sudoku-vihko ja jalkakylpysuolaa. Helmipuolella oli mustarutiilikvartsia palkkeina, ruusukvartsia ovaaleina, fluoriittikukkia, kaksi isoa pyöreää kiveä, kasa sydämiä ja MOP-lehti. Niin, ja vermeiliä!

The last SSBF surprise was quite a chest of treasures! Apart of the lovely card I found a big booklet of Sudokus (apparently bought from Latvia) and some foot bath salt, which is indeed very useful during the summer. And the beads then! Black rutilated quartz, rose quartz, fluorite flowers, two big round beads, handful of hearts and a MOP-leave. Yes, and some vermeil, too!

SSHY susipaketti - SSBF with Wolf Soul

Ooh, tälle ihanien pakettien vyörylle ei näytä tulevan loppua! Olen jo aivan nolo kaikesta tästä huomiosta, jonka olen saanut osakseni rakkailta helmiystäviltäni! Torstaina 22.5. saapui tällainen ihana paketti, jonka sydämenä oli mitä kaunein itsetehty susikortti. Wau! Lisäksi kaivelin kuoren uumenista Sudoku-ristikoita, punapellavan siemeniä (aivan ihanaa!), pikkuisia lasihelmiä ja vinkeitä punasävyisiä lasilehtiä. Serpentiiniä kuutioina, pyöreinä, iso kolikkokin mukana. Riipuksia oli lisäksi kaksi, violetti särölasiriipus ja obsidiaaniovaali. Kaiken kukkuraksi löysin vielä mustaa nauhaa ja sille hopeoidut nauhanpäätteet (kiitos, noita minulla ei ollutkaan omasta takaa), sekä hopeisen lukon ja korvakorukoukkuja. Oi, kaunis kiitos jälleen kerran, rakas SuperSuloinen Salainen helmiystäväni!

Oh my, there seems to be no end to these wonderful surprises! I am feeling somewhat embarrased for all this attention and beautiful gifts which I have received from my lovely beader friend/friends. On Thursday the 22th arrived this fantastic envelope with the most beautiful and touching wolf postcard inside (self made, of course). Wow! When I got my heart steady again, I picked from the envelope some Sudokus, Scarlet Flax seeds (red Linum Grandiflorum), three kinds of small glass beads and cute red/clear glass leaves. There was also New Jade in cubes and different round shapes, even one big coin. Furthermore I found two pendants, lilac crackled glass pendant and obsidian oval pendant. And, like all this was not enough, there was some black waxed cord and cord ends (thanks, I didn't have those in my stashes), and a silver lobster clasp and earring hooks. My dear, SuperSweet SuperSecret beader friend, I want to thank You again most kindly!

Lehtiä - Leaves

Virkkaustyö vaihteeksi - tarvitsin yksilöllisen lahjan erityiselle ystävälle. Novitan virkkauslangasta tehdyt pikkuliinat, yksi iso ja neljä pientä. Malli on mukailtu Kauneimmat Käsityöt -lehden mallista. Nyt on sitten känsä etusormen reunassa, hihih. ,-) Kuvassa rekvisiittana ja mittakaavana kukkiva tuomen oksa.

I took to crocheting for a change, because I needed a special gift for a special friend. ,-)
Four small and one bigger runners were made of Novita crocheting yarn. I somewhat simplified the model from a finnish crafts magazine. And now I have a blisters in my poor forefinger, hi ,-)
In the picture I have a branch of flowering bird cherry tree, which also gives some scale.

SSHY itämainen paketti - SSBF Orient Express

Aivan käsittämätöntä, ihanaa, uskomatonta! Jälleen oli laatikossa SSHY-paketti, suloisen mystinen, tuoksuvan itämainen kokonaisuus. Tuo "Indian Chai" -tee on aivan fantastinen nautinto, niin tuoksu kuin maku, namnam. Teen lisäksi kuoresta paljastui sympatiaa uhkuva spanielikortti, paljetteja, fossiiliakaattihelmiä, larvikiittia useissa muodoissa, granaattineliöitä, onyx-lehtiä ja kaksi aivan uskomattoman sievää swaron mustaa perhosta. Kiitos, rakas SSHY, ties monennenko kerran! Olen suorastaan nolo kaikesta saamastani huomiosta.

This is really unbelieveable, wonderful, very touching! Again I found a SSBF envelope sitting in my mailbox! This time it was a sweet, mysterious, scented, very oriental surprise. I already fell in love with the "Indian Chai" -tea, the scent as well as the taste are delicious, yummy. Thank You for introducing this product! In addition to tea, the envelope revealed sympathy in form of a pretty spaniel dog, and a real bead treasure: black sequins with a great shine, round grey-black fossil agate, Larvikite (Norwegian Pearl Stone) in various shapes, small garnet squares, onyx in leave shape and two unbelieveably cute, black Swarovski butterflies. Thank You, my dear SSBF, once again! I'm beginning to feel embarrased because of all these treasures I've got.

A closeup of the smaller beads. The Norwegian Pearl Stone (Larvikite) has wild fire and sparkle in it, although a photograph never can truly tell their beauty. And those sweet and cute little butterflies have a place in earrings, I already have the idea in my mind.

SSHY superyllätys - SuperSBF Super Surprise

Aivan käsittämätöntä! Tämä on taikuutta, ihmeellistä, hurmaavaa... loppuu sanat, apua! Perjantaina löysin jälleen postilaatikosta kuoren, eikä tällä kertaa ollut epäilystäkään, etteikö kyseessä olisi ollut SSHY-paketti. Aivan ihana sininen kirjekuori, täynnä pikkuisia tassunjälkiä, osoitetarrassakin tassunkuva. Ja katsokaa, mitä kaikkea ihanaa kuoresta löytyi! Ihana violetti prinsessakynäkin! Voi nyyh, ilon kyyneleitä olen kuivaillut pitkään ja hartaasti. Kyllä ihmiset voivat olla ihania, herttaisia, rakastettavia, lempeitä, kultaisia! This is quite unbelieveable! This is magical, wonderful, charming... I'm nearly speechless! On Friday the 16th I again found an envelope from my mailbox - and there was no doubt where it was coming from: my SuperSecret BeaderFriend again! The envelope itself was a work of art: beautiful blue color was embellished with silver pawprints, and even the address label had a genuine wolf pawprint on it. Wow! And look, what beauties were hidden inside! Even a lilac coloured pen with rose and feathers, fit for a princess! Oh, I'm drying my eyes here from the tears of joy. I never believed that people could be so wonderful, so loveable, so caring, so friendly, so kind. I'm having a feeling that half of my beader friends in Helmetti are now making this dream-come-true to me, because all the envelopes and cards have been so different. But whatever, my SuperSweet SuperSecret BeaderFriend gets my deepest gratitude, I am feeling humble in front of this kindness.

And the big, brown oval is a cocos bead, a totally new material for me. And of course there was a beautiful hand-made card with spring feelings!

Another closeup photo: unbelieveably beautiful A-grade faceted amethyst coins, the cashmere bead and red freshwater pearls, which are like lingonberries! So cute! And last but not least, those delicate carved garnet squares, oh my... I'm in love!

Nyöriä, jossa kaunis "For You"-charmi, sekä ruiskaunokin siemeniä. Miten tiesitkin, rakas SSHY, että maaseudun kasvattina rakastan ruiskaunokkeja? Lapsuudessani kävin niitä keräämässä peltojen laidoilta.

All those beautiful beads came wrapped in white "silk" paper tied with the dark red rope and on top was beautiful For You -charm. And there was also a pouchful of Cornflower seeds - how did You know, that I love Cornflowers? I was born and raised on a farm and used to go picking Cornflowers from the fields. Well, that was the time before active weed killing... ,-)

SSHY tuplaylläri - SuperSBF double surprise

Johan minua nyt hemmotellaan! En ollut silmiäni uskoa, kun postilaatikossa oli kaksi salaperäistä kuorta. Minun SuperSHY:ni on myös SuperSalaperäinen, sillä nämä kuoret tulivat ihan eri paikoista ja käsialakin näytti kummassakin erilaiselta. En käsitä enää ollenkaan... mutta en voisi olla onnellisempi!

Well, I am being pampered now, spoiled even! I couldn't quite believe my eyes, when I found not just one, but TWO mysterious envelopes in my mailbox! My SuperSecret Beader Friend is also Super Mysterious, because these envelopes came from different towns - and even the handwriting seemed very different. I just cannot understand this... but I couldn't be happier!

Ensimmäinen kuori kätki sisälleen Zelda Wisdom -kortin suloisella keijukaishauvalla ja mukavat terveiset. Lisäksi kaivoin valtavan pussillisen 4 mm:n Swarovski Jet-biconeja (mustia siis), sekä hopeisen sydämen ja meritähtiriipuksen. Aivan fantastista!

The first envelope carried a nice Zelda Wisdom -postcard with a cute (?) doggy fairy and nice wishes. I also found there a huge pouch full of 4 mm Swarovski bicones, Jet black, a silver heart charm and a starfish pendant, also in silver. Fantastic!

Toisessa kuoressa oli tavaraa vaikka millä mitalla: mustalla huumorilla höystetty Bunny Suicides -kortti (huomaa pikkuruiset korvat olympiatulen jalustan sisällä!). SSHY oli saanut käsiinsä myös japanilaisia ristikoita, joita on hauska kesän sadepäivänä näperrellä. Ratkaisutkin hän oli laittanut mukaan, mutta tiukasti teipattuna turvaan kurkkivilta silmiltä. ,-) Helmisadetta sitten riittikin: pussillinen isoja delicoja (mustia), uskomattoman kaunis akaattikolikko, granaattia, vaaleanpunaisia Swarovskin helmiäislasihelmiä. Lisäksi minulle täysin uutena tuttavuutena swaron "vinkuraisia" helmiäislasihelmiä (malli 5826), värinä vaalea malva. Hauskoja! Ai niin, ja hopeinen salpalukkokin kuoresta löytyi! Käsittämättömän ihana SSHY minulla on!

The other envelope revealed a real treasure! There was a humorous Bunny Suicides -postcard (note the tiny little ears inside the big olympic torch!), and my SSBF had found some japanese puzzles, which I will enjoy solving during some rainy summer day. She/he had also included the solutions, but tightly closed to an envelope, so I'll have no temptation of cheating. ,-) And the pearls then: black big delicas, unbelieveable beautiful agate coin, tiny garnet ovals, light pink Swarovski pearls, a toggle clasp in silver. And on top of everything, some light mauve assymmetrical Swarovski pearls, model 5826. How cute they are! I have such a marvellous SuperSBF!

SHY uudet kuviot - SBF developments

Aikani itkeskelin ja katselin suorastaan kateellisena toisten saamia ihania yllätyspaketteja. Ei vaan kolissut postilaatikko minulla, nyyh. SHY:lläni oli loppujen lopuksi niin kiirettä, että kuvioihin astui SuperSalainen HelmiYstävä, joka onnistui yllättämään minut aivan totaalisesti 12.5. Paketissa oli valkoisia makeanvedenhelmiä (isoja), hematiittikuvioita (tuo pöllö on aivan hurmaava) sekä minulle aivan uutta tuttavuutta, rodoniittia. Kaunis kivi... voi kun ehtisin toteuttaa toukokuun aikana kuukauden teemakorun, nyt minulla olisivat sekä idea että oikea materiaali olemassa - kiitos SuperSHY:ni.

Eikä siinä vielä kaikki: paketissa oli mukana kortti, jossa SuperSHY:ni lupaili paketille vielä seuralaisia! Nyt alkaa ihan oikeasti jännittää kuin pikkutyttöä kauppareissulla: saanks mä karkkia ja jos, niin minkälaista. ,-)

For almost two months I was close to crying, when I saw the wonderful SBF-mailings of my fellow beaders. No more surprises for me, sob... Obviously my original SBF was so busy and quite unable to fulfill her "task", and for my big surprise a SuperSecret BeaderFriend came to my aid! This wonderful packet came 12.5, and look how beautiful things I got: big, white freshwater pearls, hematite pendants (I just love the owl, it's so cute!) and rodonite teardrops. Rodonite was unfamiliar stone for me, but I quite fell in love with it, such a beautiful matrix... oh, I wish I had time to make the Theme Jewelry for May. Now I have both the idea and the right materials (only time is a bit hard to find). Thank You so much, my dear SuperSBF!

And that's not all! I also got a pretty postcard telling me, that this is just a beginning. Oh my! Now I'm really getting anxious, just like a little girl in a supermarket: am I getting candy this time, and if so, what kind... ,-)

Rippe The Doggy

Tadaa, tässä vihdoinkin Piia's design tilaushelmi valmiina kaulakoruna! Helmen mallina on ollut nuorempi koirani, suloinen monirotuotus nimeltä Rippe. Malli on aivan yhtä suloinen kuin lasitaituri-Pian tekemä helmi!

Jotta helmi ei hukkuisi muuhun koruun, pujottelin vaijeriin Luxonian pikkuisia särölasihelmiä (väri kulta) sekä 2,4 mm:n kullanvärisiä metallihelmiä. Tällä rakenteella koirahelmi pysyy paikoillaan eikä käännä takalistoaan jatkuvasti näkyville (tosin sekin puoli helmestä on aivan täydellinen!). Korun tekeminen aiheutti kieltämättä hiukan päänvaivaa, mutta miettiminen ja kokeileminen kannatti.

Well well, here we have - at last - the wonderful Piia's design glass doggy, finally made to a necklace! The model for the bead was my younger dog, sweet little mix-breed creature named Rippe. He is just as cute as this bead made by unbeatable glass artist, my friend Pia!

To avoid suffocating the doggy-bead's cuteness, I made the other part as simple as possible. I used small crackle glass beads (from Luxonia, color gold) and tiny, 2,4 mm:n gold plated metal beads. With this structure the doggy stays nicely in it's place and doesn't turn his backside to front all the time (although that side of the bead is just as perfect as the front!). Making this necklace gave me some headache, but thinking and experimenting go it perfect.

Kaveriksi ihanalle, näyttävälle koirahelmelle tein hyvin vaatimattomat korvakorut. Materiaaleina 0,6 mm:n kullattu kuparilanka, samat pienet särölasi- ja välihelmet sekä riisinmuotoiset, ruskeansävyiset kissansilmähelmet.

To accompany the unique and flashy doggy bead, I made these very simple earrings. I used 0,6 mm gold plated copper wire, small crackle glass beads and rice-shaped brownish cat's eye beads.
